Kota Yogyakarta adalah salah satu kota besar di Pulau Jawa yang merupakan ibukota dan pusat pemerintahan Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, dan sekaligus tempat kedudukan bagi Sultan Yogyakarta dan Adipati Pakualam.Salah satu kecamatan di Yogyakarta, yaitu Kotagede pernah menjadi pusat Kesultanan Mataram antara 1575-1640. Keraton (Istana) yang masih berfungsi dalam arti yang sesungguhnya adalah Karaton Ngayogyakarta dan Puro Pakualaman, yang merupakan pecahan dari Mataram.


Etimologi

Nama Yogyakarta terambil dari dua kata,
yaitu Ayogya yang berarti "kedamaian" (atau tanpa perang, a "tidak", yogya merujuk pada yodya atau yudha, yang berarti "perang"), dan Karta yang berarti "baik". Tapak keraton Yogyakarta sendiri menurut babad (misalnya Babad Giyanti) dan leluri (riwayat oral) telah berupa sebuah dalem yang bernama Dalem Gerjiwati; lalu dinamakan ulang oleh Sunan Pakubuwana II sebagai Dalem Ayogya.


Sejarah

Mataram Hindu (Abad ke-10 Masehi)

Meskipun hilang dari catatan sejarah sejak berpindahnya pusat pemerintahan Kerajaan Medang pada abad ke-10 ke timur, wilayah lembah di selatan Gunung Merapi sejak abad ke-15 tetap dihuni banyak orang dan konon menjadi bagian dari kawasan yang disebut sebagai Pengging. Dalam kronik perjalanannya, Bujangga Manik, seorang pangeran pertapa dari Kerajaan Sunda pernah melewati wilayah ini, tetapi tidak menyebut nama "Yogya" atau yang bermiripan.


Mataram Islam (1575 - 1620)

Cikal-bakal kota Yogya adalah kawasan Kotagede, sekarang menjadi salah satu kecamatan di Kota Yogyakarta. Keraton penguasa Mataram Islam pertama, Panembahan Senapati (Sutawijaya), didirikan di suatu babakan yang merupakan bagian dari hutan Mentaok (alas Mentaok). Kompleks tertua keraton ini sekarang masih tersisa sebagai bagian batu benteng, pemakaman, dan masjid. Setelah sempat berpindah dua kali (di keraton Pleret dan keraton Kerta, keduanya berada di wilayah Kabupaten Bantul), pusat pemerintahan Kesultanan Mataram beralih ke Kartasura.


Setelah Perjanjian Giyanti (1745 - 1945)

Sejarah kota memasuki babak baru menyusul ditandatanganinya Perjanjian Giyanti antara Sunan Pakubuwono III, Pangeran Mangkubumi (yang dinobatkan menjadi Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, dan VOC pada 13 Februari 1755. Perjanjian ini membagi dua Mataram menjadi Mataram Timur (yang dinamakan Surakarta) dan Mataram Barat (yang kemudian dinamakan Ngayogyakarta)


Yogyakarta sebagai pusat pemerintahan politik baru secara resmi berdiri sejak Pangeran Mangkubumi (Sultan Hamengkubuwono I) mengakhiri pemberontakan yang dipimpinnya, mendapat wilayah kekuasaan separuh wilayah Mataram yang tersisa, dan diizinkan mendirikan keraton di tempat yang dikenal sekarang. Tanggal wisuda keraton ini, 7 Oktober 1756, kini dijadikan sebagai hari jadi Kota Yogyakarta.


Perluasan kota Yogyakarta berjalan secara cepat. Perkampungan-perkampungan di luar tembok keraton dinamakan menurut kesatuan pasukan keraton, seperti Patangpuluhan, Bugisan, Mantrijeron, dan sebagainya. Selain itu, dibangun pula kawasan untuk orang-orang berlatar belakang non-pribumi, seperti Kotabaru untuk orang Belanda dan Pecinan untuk orang Tionghoa. Pola pengelompokan ini merupakan hal yang umum pada abad ke-19 sampai abad ke-20, sebelum berakhirnya penjajahan. Banyak di antaranya sekarang menjadi nama kecamatan di dalam wilayah kota.


Terdapat situs-situs tua yang tinggal puing, khususnya yang didirikan pada masa awal tetapi kemudian diterlantarkan karena rusak akibat gempa besar yang melanda pada tahun 1812, seperti situs tetirahan Warungboto, yang didirikan oleh Sultan Hamengkubuwana II dan situs Taman Sari di dalam tembok keraton yang didirikan Sultan Hamengkubuwana I. Pasar Beringharjo sudah dikenal sebagai tempat transaksi dagang sejak keraton berdiri, namun bangunan permanennya baru didirikan pada awal abad ke-20 (1925).


Paruh kedua abad ke-19 merupakan masa pemodernan kota. Stasiun Lempuyangan pertama dibangun dan selesai 1872. Stasiun Yogyakarta (Tugu) mulai beroperasi pada tanggal 2 Mei 1887. Yogyakarta di awal abad ke-20 merupakan kota yang cukup maju, dengan jaringan listrik, jalan untuk kereta kuda dan mobil cukup panjang, serta berbagai hotel serta pusat perbelanjaan (Jalan Malioboro dan Pasar Beringharjo) telah tersedia. Perkumpulan sepak bola lokal, PSIM, didirikan pada tanggal 5 September 1929 dengan nama Perserikatan Sepak Raga Mataram.


Masa Revolusi (1945 - 1950)

Kota Yogyakarta juga memainkan percaturan politik sejarah Indonesia, pada 4 Januari 1946, Pemerintah Republik Indonesia memutuskan untuk memindahkan Ibu kota dari Jakarta ke Yogyakarta setelah Belanda dengan Sekutu melancarkan serangan ke Indonesia. Kota ini juga menjadi saksi atas Agresi Militer Belanda II pada 19 Desember 1948, yang pada akhirnya dapat diduduki Belanda, serta Serangan Umum 1 Maret 1949 yang berhasil mneguasai Yogyakarta selama 6 jam.


Pusaka dan Identitas Daerah

■Tombak Kyai Wijoyo Mukti

Merupakan Pusaka Pemberian Raja Kraton Yogyakarta Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Tombak ini dibuat pada tahun 1921 semasa pemerintahan Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII. Senjata yang sering dipergunakan para prajurit ini mempunyai panjang 3 meter. Tombak dengan pamor wos wutah wengkon dengan dhapur kudhuping gambir ini, landeannya sepanjang 2,5 meter terbuat dari kayu walikun, yakni jenis kayu yang sudah lazim digunakan untuk gagang tombak dan sudah teruji kekerasan dan keliatannya.


Sebelumnya tombak ini disimpan di bangsal Pracimosono dan sebelum diserahkan terlebih dahulu dijamasi oleh KRT. Hastono Negoro, di dalem Yudonegaran. Pemberian nama Wijoyo Mukti baru dilakukan bebarapa hari menjelang upacara penyerahan ke Pemkot Yogyakarta, pada peringatan hari ulang tahun ke-53 Pemerintah kota Yogyakarta tanggal 7 Juni 2000. Upacara penyerahan dilakukan di halaman Balaikota dan pusaka ini dikawal khusus oleh prajurit Kraton ”Bregodo Prajurit Mantrijero”.


Tombak Kyai Wijoyo Mukti melambangkan kondisi Wijoyo Wijayanti. Artinya, kemenangan sejati di masa depan, dimana seluruh lapisan masyarakat dapat merasakan kesenangan lahir bathin karena tercapainya tingkat kesejahteraan yang benar-benar merata.
